The words are still echoing:

If you can look up, you can get up.

If you can get up, you can make a difference.

These were the sentiments from Tony, one of five new graduates from the curriculum portion of our program, as he talked about the HWH program which included both curriculum and apprenticeship..  Although Covid and quarantines had delayed the celebration several times, it did not in any way temper the pride, enthusiasm and spirit of this cohort. They had clearly evolved from a random set of individuals to a cohesive family and team, that took their job, and now clearly their lives, quite seriously.

The pride was palpable as the graduates spoke directly to the new recruits, talking about the courage, persistence, and hard work they now put into the job skill they each now owned. They talked about the expression of self, the extension of themselves that they put into the food preparation each day.  It was clearly more meaningful than just chopping carrots. These graduates have been transformed, restarting their lives, with a new direction full of optimism, hope and pride. By the end of this month, all will likely be placed in employment in a local employer, ready to embark on the next chapter of their journey toward self-sufficiency.

The cycle continues.  But now, it is a very new cycle.  A cycle of graduates, celebrating achievement and a new start on life.  At the same time, a new cohort starts, watching the success of the previous group, and likely wondering about their own path. Perhaps full of doubt – will it be similar to the past which had constant obstacles, with no path to overcome. Or will this time, will it truly be different? Would they be able to do like this group did, and meet their challenges with courage, persistence and hard work, and ultimately overcome?  Yes indeed they will, as that is why they are here.

HWH is helping people restart their lives. We provide a supportive environment where people can put in the necessary hard work to learn a new skill, gain practical experience, and get employed. We provide housing, mental health, and supportive services to support these individuals on their journey to self-sufficiency. Won’t you consider joining us to help those wanting to help themselves.
